This is one for my Chicago readers.
Hooked on Fish is a type of fresh seafood CSA. A few days before the weekly delivery to your area, you get an email describing the two featured choices. You will also learn about the origins of the catch, as well as how and when it was caught. Each week, they deliver on specified days to various retail locations around the city, and you can pick up your order at that store within a three-hour window. With the virus and resultant store closures, you may have to opt for home delivery at $10 a week. Between the offerings, you make your choice—one or both–in half- or one-pound increments. There are a few frozen items available each week, like Key West pink shrimp or Alaskan king crab legs. Their website includes a compendium of interesting recipes and preparation techniques.
This is a superb company. The prices are fair, especially when you see how beautifully the fish is portioned; the flesh is always pristine and the delivery always on time. Karen Wollins, the owner, is very responsive to questions or problems. At first, I thought that being limited to two options a week would be an issue, but it has, in fact, proved to be an advantage. I prefer oily fleshed fish and previously labeled all white flaky fish insipid. Since shopping through Hooked on Fish however, I have tried many varieties that previously I would have ignored and have been delighted.
Although choices are limited and a “regular fish day” may seem restrictive, Hooked on Fish offers the best-quality retail fish in the city of Chicago. I always eagerly anticipate what the next week’s choices will be. This week, it’s sashimi-grade ahi tuna or hook-and-line caught mahi mahi. I’m looking forward to Thursday.
